Abstract:
This study examined the applicability of the strontium doped lanthanum mangan perovskite and strontium doped lanthanum iron cobalt perovskite for removal of ammonia, one of the most encountered contaminant in the surface waters. The influence of initial concentration of ammonia (0.075 to 0.44) mol•L−1, temperature (273, 288 and 298 K), and contact time (60–300 min) was investigated on the removal of target contaminant from water through different experimental runs. The adsorption of ammonia irregularly changed by increasing temperature and with increased concentration of the adsorbent. Maximum removal was, however, achieved at 288 K with both adsobent materials. The results indicated that selected perovskite adsorbents had best performance for removal of ammonia in the concentration range from 0.1 to 0.3 mol•L−1. The equilibrium time was achieved after 60 minutes. Freundlich adsorption isotherms fit well in the experimental data and its constants were evaluated. Findings of the present study revealed that La0,85Sr0,15MnO3-δ and La0,6Sr0,4Fe0,8Co0,2O3-δ can be used as adsorbents for the removal of ammonia from aqueous solutions. This study may serve as baseline data and may help in designing further experiments aimed to design waste-water treatment plants for the treatment of ammonia in particular and that for pollutant species in general.
