Abstract:
Electrical discharge machining (EDM) is a non-traditional manufacturing process, based on electro-thermal energy conversion. In this process, the material is removed by a series of successive discrete discharges between the tool and the workpiece that develops a very high temperature. Therefore, investigation of the electrical discharge energy which in the machining zone is transformed into heat is of key importance in EDM. This paper takes a different approach towards the identification of the thermal process of the EDM by using the inverse heat conduction problem. The inverse problem was used for modeling and analysis of thermal energy conversion processes in order to improve machining efficiency. In addition to the temperature field, this method allows the determination of heat flux density distribution on the workpiece. By using surface temperature and heat flux, the thermal inverse problem allows efficient identification of discharge energy parameters to achieve the highest possible productivity and quality.
